Les dernieres nouvelles des cyclistes...

After a last few treats in Bangkok, Marc flew back to a slightly less warm Alsace last week...

Apres quelques derniers plaisirs culinaires a Bangkok, Marc nous a quitte la semaine derniere pour le froid de l'Alsace.


We spent a few days deciding what to do with the rest of our time away and plumped for a little holiday within the holiday to start with - a few weeks in our favourite little guesthouse on the Mekong before any more cycling :o)

Nous avons passes quelques jours a se demander que faire de nos dernieres semaines de voyage et avons decides de passer d'abord quelques semaines au calme du Mekong dans notre petit bungalow prefere avant de remonter sur les velos...

En route, we met Alain and Annick, two French cyclists who we've been bumping into across Thailand for the last three weeks - another pleasurable chat, this time with a chance to take a picture with the bikes at last!

En route, on a croise Alain et Annick, deux cyclistes francais qu'on a rencontre plusieurs fois au cours de ces dernieres semaines. Super sympa de se revoir et l'occasion de prendre une photo, avec les velos cette fois ci.

As you can see, Sylvia settled into holiday mode quite quickly... here she is this morning (day one of the 'holiday') at 10am, post breakfast...

Comme vous pouvez le constater, Sylvia s'est vite habituee au mode relaxation.... la voici ce matin a 10h, apres le petit dej'

and this afternoon at 4pm, post-, well, post nothing really!

et cet apres-midi, apres, ben, rien en fait!!

After many days of research and emailling, we've had to decide against the return trip on the Trans-Siberian... a great shame but great plans for a future trip starting from London where visas might be available! So we'll be arriving in Europe (sadly by plane..) at the end of April and wandering our way home via various friends and family in Germany, France, Italy and Holland before making it to London by mid-June... still on our bikes, all being well!

Apres beaucoup de recherches et de demandes d'information, on s'est rendu compte que le retour en train allait etre trop difficile - c'est dommage pour cette fois-ci, mais cela ne veut pas dire qu'on ne le ferra jamais: on a deja des idees pour un voiyage en transsiberian dans l'autre sens a l'avenir. En attandant, on arrivera donc en Europe (malheureusement en avion..) a la fin avril, et passera quelques semaines a revoir des amis et nos familles via l'Allemagne, la France, L'Italie et la Hollande, avant d'arriver a Londres pour la mi-juin... toujours sur nos velos (et le train).

Afterall, the mango season has just started, so we couldn't leave Asia before enjoying them to the full.....

Apres tout, la saison des mangues vient de commencer - on ne pouvait pas quitter l'Asie avant d'en avoir profite un max!!

As promised, some more pictures of dad in Thailand. Et voici quelques photos supplementaires de papa en Thailande.

Tasting a refreshing fresh coconut on the side of the road. Tout d'abord, a defaut de biere et lors des etapes, une noix de coco fait bien l'affaire.

As a good Alsacian, dad managed to find the only vineyard in Thailand. Here, he is tasting a fresh and dry Chenin Blanc, similar to a Riesling. Et en bon alsacien, il trouva la seule cave a vin de la Thailande. Ici en degustation d'un chenin blanc, plutot sec, proche du Riesling.


However, Harriet and Sylv are happy enough with a nice iced coffee. Par contre, les filles, plus sobres, se contentent d'un bon cafe glace.

As far as cycling goes, we have left the Mekong and are now in the hills. Niveau velo, nous avons continue a longer le Mekong et sommes maintenant dans les montagnes. Deja 7 etapes.


Dad checked the condition of the boats on the Mekong and was quite satisfied. Ici, papa verifia l'etat des jonques du Mekong, bien plus etanches que celles des bateliers de la Lauch.

Dad had spent so many sleepless moments chasing reptiles in his room that he decided to eat one on a stick. Papa en avait tellement marre des reptiles de Thailande qu'il decida d'en devorer un bien cuit au barbecue.

We found a great job for dad on the road: like in the Tour de France, in the difficult stages, there is always a 'water carrier'. Nous avons trouve un bon role pour papa: comme au tour de France, dans les etapes difficiles, il y a toujours un porteur d'eau.

In the mountains, it's a bit chilly in the morning. Like father, like daughter: a pair of socks was needed to supplement the sandals. En montagne, il fait frais le matin. Ici, tel pere, telle fille: un peu frileus des pieds.

We spent a day off in Chiang Khan, a lovely little town on the Mekong with traditional wooden houses. The next stage was a right turn, towards Loei. Nous avons passe un jour de repos a Chiang Khan, joli petit village au bord du mekong fait de maisons en bois traditionnelles. La prochaine etape fut vers la droite, direction Loei.

At sunrise, we saw the alms giving to the monks in the streets of Chiang Khan. Au petit matin, nous pouvions voir la donation d'offrandes au moines dans les rues de Chiang Khan.

The wonderful sunsets on the Mekong at Chiang Khan... and a roamntic light on Sylv's favourite tree: the Papaya tree. Delicious! Et le magnifique coucher de soleil sur le Mekong a Chiang Khan. Et l'arbre prefere de Sylvia: celui qui donne les delicieuses papayes!

Mon pere en Thailande

Here are the first pictures of my dada in Thailand
Et voici, en exclusivite, les premieres images de mon pere en Thailande.

He arrived on time, over a week ago already, after a long journey on the plane and very little sleep. All his luggage arrived with him too and the bicycle is in one piece.

Il est bien arrive, il y a maintenant deja une semaine apres un long voyage en avion et peu de sommeil. Tous ses cartons sont egalement bien arrives et le velo est entier.

After a very short period of one day only to get used to the jetlag and the heat, we went straight for a long journey on a very hot night train to Nong Khai. The light was very bright in the carriage...

Apres une courte periode d'aclimatation de 1 jour seulement a Bangkok, nous avons enchaine avec une etape en train de nuit sous la chaleur. La lumiere etait tres forte dans le wagon...

Then, we started cycling, from Nong Khai at the border with laos on the North-East, along the Mekong heading West. Already 4 stages, between 40 and 80kms through paddy fields and banana, tamarind, papaye, goyave, pineapple and mangoe plantations.

Ensuite, en selle, de Nong Khai, a la frontiere avec le Laos au Nord Est, en longeant le Mekong vers l'Ouest. Deja 4 etapes, de 40 a 80kms a travers les plantations de riz, bananes, tamarin, papaye, goyave, ananas, mangues, etc, etc.

Dad got used pretty quickly to the heat, the Thai way of life and to desert island life, as evident from the pictures below.

Papa s'est bien habitue a la chaleur et aux coutumes thai et a la ville de Robinson Crusoe, comme le montre ces photos:

A little nap in the hammac in his shack (which he was sharing with huge geckos). La sieste dans le hammac dans sa cabane au fond du jardin (qu'il partagea avec d'enormes geckos).

First lesson about surviving on a desert island: do not open the mosquito net. Otherwise, one has to get up in the night to chase the mosquitos that were.locked inside. Premiere lecon de survie sous les tropiques: ne pas ouvrir la moustiquaire. Sinon il faut se relever en pleine nuit et chasser les moustiques qu'on a enferme dedans...

Then, foraging for 'bread'. Ensuite, recherche de 'pain' sous vide dans les superettes.

However we think that the heat might have been a bit too much: he started trying to comminicate with caged birds ?! Par contre, la chaleur lui ai vite monte a la tete: le voici qui essaye de communiquer avec les oiseaux en cage ?!

He also got attracted by these tiny speakers for his new i-pod... Et le voici attire par des petits haut-parleurs pour son i-pod...

You would have noticed also the bright yellow cap. It's from his cycling club in France. Vous remarquerez egalement la belle casquette jaune de son club cyclo.
